My Underpants Didn’t Make it to the Nile

This trip to Egypt was extraordinary, and I’ll go again soon.  I could tell you all about each temple and the Goddesses I communed with there, but really, what’s most bizarre is the happenings before and after my trip.

My luggage arrived in Cairo two days later than I did and one day after I’d boarded a plane to Aswan.  I didn’t have anything except my computer and a few carryon items.  Fortunately, I am blessed with an Egyptian ‘sister’ named Helen, who packed a bag for me full of lovely clothes (better than I’d brought) and everything else I’d need, including five pair of brand new underwear.  The clothes were so perfect, in fact, that when I wore hers, all my friends complemented me, and when I wore my own clothes later, no one said a word. Not having a suitcase could be such an inconvenience, but because of Helen’s generosity, I was able to enjoy my trip worry-free.

It was an hour drive in horrendous traffic to get my luggage, but I would have missed two very special parts of the tour had I picked up my bag as soon as I arrived in Cairo again.  I was not going to miss entering the Great Pyramid or the adventure to Saqqara, so my bag sat there unclaimed in the airport.  They threatened to return it, and I gladly would have let them do that, except for the fact that it contained gifts for my friends.  I did worry that the bag may have been gone through by the time I received it, but was relieved that the lock was still in place.  I rarely lock my luggage, but for some reason, this time I did.

As for my tour of Egypt, we got into places on this trip that most people never have the opportunity to visit.  Our guide, Mary Lomando, led us through the temples, told us wonderful stories about the Goddesses of the ancient times, and her love for Egyptology captivated all of us. I returned home with a newfound love of Egypt and her history, not to mention fantastic statues and memorabilia.

I want to share my entire trip here, but I am getting the message not to.  Suffice it to say, it was one of the best trips of my life and I believe this will be an annual journey. I lived in Egypt nine years ago and have returned many times since, but this trip sparked a desire in me to stay connected to this place so far away from where I live, yet it is somewhere that I feel at home whenever I’m there.

Always good when a writer leaves you wanting to hear more. But yes, the universe seems to be telling you not now. What a gift to have friends like Helen around the world.
